พิธีบายศรีสู่ขวัญ บางครั้งก็เรียกว่า พิธีบายศรี, พิธีสู่ขวัญ, พิธีทำขวัญ, พิธีรับขวัญ เป็นประเพณีอย่างหนึ่งของคนไทย และคนลาวด้วยความเชื่อที่ว่า ทุกคนเกิดมาพร้อมกับสิ่งนามธรรมอย่างหนึ่งที่เรียกกันว่า “ขวัญ” ซึ่งมีหน้าที่รักษาประคับประคองชีวิตและติดตามเจ้าของไปทุกหนแห่ง การทำพิธีสู่ขวัญจึงเป็นการเชิญขวัญที่หนีหายไปให้เข้ามาอยู่กับตัว และเชื่อว่าเป็นการส่งเสริมพลังใจให้เข้มแข็ง มีสติและไม่ประมาท [1]

ประเพณีบายศรีสู่ขวัญใช้เครื่องเชิญขวัญที่เรียกว่า บายศรี ทำด้วยใบตอง รูปคล้ายกระทง เป็นชั้น ๆ มีขนาดใหญ่เล็กสอบขึ้นไปตามลำดับ เป็น 3 ชั้น 5 ชั้น 7 ชั้น หรือ 9 ชั้น มีเสาปักตรงกลางเป็นแกน มีเครื่องสังเวยวางอยู่ในบายศรี และมีไข่ขวัญ (ไข่ต้ม) เสียบอยู่บนยอดบายศรี มีหลายประเภท เช่น บายศรีตอง บายศรีปากชาม บายศรีใหญ่ (ภาษาเขมร บาย = ข้าว + ศรี = สิริ หมายความว่า ข้าวอันเป็นสิริหรือข้าวขวัญ) [2] มีการพันสายสิญจน์ไว้โดยรอบเพื่อใช้ผูกข้อมือผู้รับขวัญ ผู้นำทำพิธีเรียกว่า หมอขวัญ

ประวัติ
