การจำแนก ปลวก อย่างกว้างๆ แบ่งออกเป็น 2 พวกใหญ่ๆ คือ ปลวกที่อาศัยอยู่ในดิน และ ปลวกที่ไม่อาศัยอยู่ในดิน ปลวกอาศัยอยู่ในดิน จำแนกได้เป็น 3 พวก คือ

ปลวก ใต้ดิน (Subterranean termites) พวกนี้จะอาศัยอยู่ในดินเกือบตลอดอายุของมันแม้ว่าจะออกจากผิวดินไปแล้ว ก็ยังมีการติดต่อกับพื้นดินอยู่ โดยการทำอุโมงค์ทางเดินด้วยดินไปสู่แหล่งอาหารต่าง ๆ ที่อยู่เหนือดิน นอกจากนี้อุโมงค์ทางเดินยังเป็นเครื่องป้องกันอันตรายจากศัตรู เช่น มด
ปลวก ที่อยู่ตามจอมปลวก (Mound-building termites)เป็นปลวกที่สร้างรังหรืออาณาจักรขนาดใหญ่ อยู่บนพื้นดินโดยใช้เม็ดดินเล็ก ๆ สร้างขึ้นเป็นเนินสูงใหญ่ที่เรียกว่า จอมปลวก จะพบเห็นทั่วไปทุกภาคของประเทศไทย และประเทศอื่นๆ ในทวีปเอเซีย อาฟริกา และออสเตรเลีย
ปลวก ที่อยู่ตามรังขนาดเล็ก (Carton-nest-building termites) รังของ ปลวก ชนิดนี้ เกิดจากมูลของ ปลวก ผสมกับเศษไม้เล็กๆ และสร้างเป็นรังที่มีรูปร่างและขนาดแตกต่างกันไป อาจจะอยู่ในดิน บนพื้นดินหรือเหนือพื้นดิน เช่น ตามต้นไม้ เสาไฟ หรืออาคารบ้านเรือน
ปลวก ไม้แห้ง (Dry-wood termites) เป็นพวกที่มีอาณาจักรหรือรังเล็กกว่า ปลวก ใต้ดิน อาศัยอยู่ในเนื้อไม้ และจะไม่ลงไปในดิน ปลวก ชนิดนี้ต้องการความชื้นในไม้แต่เพียงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้น และเป็นพวกที่ทำความเสียหายร้ายแรงต่ออาคารบ้านเรือนและเครื่องเฟอร์นิเจอร์อื่นๆ
ปลวก ไม้ชื้น (Damp-wood termites) อาศัยอยู่ในเนื้อไม้ที่มีความชื้นสูง เช่น เปลือกไม้ ไม้ซุง หรือไม้ที่ผุแล้ว ห้องที่มีความชื้นและความเย็น นับว่า เป็นสถานที่เหมาะสม สำหรับ ปลวก ประเภทนี้อาศัยอยู่ ตามปกติแล้ว เป็น ปลวก ที่ไม่มีอันตรายต่ออาคารบ้านเรือนมากนัก

Dry-wood termites are those that have colonies or nests smaller than underground termites. They live in wood. And will not go into the soil. This type of termite needs only a small amount of moisture in the wood. And they are the ones who cause serious damage to buildings and other furniture.

Damp-wood termites live in moist wood such as bark, logs, or decayed wood. A room with humidity and cold is considered a suitable place for termites of this type to live. Usually, termites are not very dangerous to buildings.
