หลักเกณฑ์การตั้งชื่อวัด

เพื่อให้การตั้งชื่อวัดเป็นไปแนวทางเดียวกัน มหาเถรสมาคมได้เห็นชอบหลักเกณฑ์การตั้งชื่อวัดไว้ดังต่อไปนี้

๑. ให้ตั้งชื่อวัดตามชื่อหมู่บ้าน ตามนโยบายของมหาเถรสมาคม โดยให้ตัดคำว่า บ้าน”ออก ยกเว้นชื่อหมู่บ้านที่มีพยางค์เดียว ให้ใช้คำว่า บ้าน....”ได้ กรณีมีชื่อวัดตามชื่อหมู่บ้านแล้ว ให้พิจารณาชื่อวัดที่ผู้เสนอขอตั้งวัดเสนอมา
๒. กรณีเสนอขอตั้งชื่อวัดตามชื่อภูเขา ถ้ำ หรืออื่น ๆ ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักกันโดยทั่วไป ให้พิจารณาตั้งชื่อวัดตามที่เสนอไว้
๓. กรณีเสนอขอตั้งชื่อวัด ตามชื่อสกุลของผู้ที่ยกที่ดินให้สร้างวัด หรือเพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่บิดา มารดา ของผู้ที่ยกที่ดินให้สร้างวัด หรือระลึกถึงผู้นำในการสร้างวัดให้พิจารณาตั้งชื่อวัดได้ ตามที่เสนอ
๔. กรณีที่ดินที่ตั้งวัดเป็นที่ดินของส่วนราชการ ถ้าในหนังสืออนุญาตให้ใช้ที่ดินระบุชื่อวัด ให้ตั้งชื่อตามชื่อที่ปรากฏในหนังสืออนุญาตให้ใช้ที่ดินเพื่อสร้างวัด ยกเว้นเพื่อความเหมาะสมหรือมีเหตุจำเป็นต้องใช้ชื่ออย่างอื่น เมื่อประกาศตั้งวัดแล้วให้สำนักงานพระพุทธศาสนาแห่งชาติ หรือเจ้าอาวาสแจ้งให้ส่วนราชการผู้ออกหนังสืออนุญาตทราบ

๗. ไม่สมควรตั้งชื่อวัดโดยใช้คำว่า วรวราราม”หรือ วราราม”ต่อท้าย
๘. การตั้งชื่อวัดไม่ควรเกิน ๗ พยางค์ ยกเว้นมีเหตุจำเป็น
